Forbbiden Path

Forbidden Path
If you haven’t hiked this trail recently, you are in for a real treat! Even in the heat of the summer the trail is cool, shaded by an archway of tree branches and shrubs.  Near the trail entrance is a peaceful memorial grove with a circular path and bench. The trail, which is maintained almost exclusively by Carantouan member Barry Skeist, is a lovely, winding three-quarter-mile out and back path that leads to the cistern of the Carantouan Springs.  A bronze plaque, unfortunately stolen three years ago, read, “Carantouan Spring. A drinking fountain of the Andastes and their successors from Prehistoric time, placed by Daughters of The American Revolution, 1927.”  Barry has made many improvements over the years and you will really enjoy your time there; our hats off to Barry for a wonderful contribution to the Greenway!

Directions
The trailhead can be accessed at the junction of NY Rt. 17C and PA Rt. 220 in Waverly, NY.  Look for the ‘Trails of Tioga’ sign on the SW corner. Park in a legal spot along Broad Street near Ted Clark’s Busy Market and carefully walk west across Rt. 220.  Go down the embankment to the trailhead.
